Dutch Consortium to partner Makueni farmers in promoting horticulture.
A Dutch consortium has pledged to partner with Makueni horticultural farmers by providing funds to enhance horticultural development in the County.
The consortium, a conglomerate of HIVOS and SNP Non Governmental Organizations, sent a delegation of its officers to meet the farmers’ association leaders and the Makueni county leadership, and to assess the viability of the project before the funds are released.
This follows a proposal presented to the Consortium by the Makueni Fruit Farmers Association seeking a Sh5Million grant, to put up fruit collection centers, a farmer training programme as well as setting up an agrochemical and farm input center.
The collection centers are meant to standardize the prices of horticultural products while eliminating brokers from the market chain, and who have been blamed for exploiting farmers.
The agrochemical and farm input center is meant to supply farmers with the right pesticides and farm inputs at affordable prices, to ensure quality products that satisfy the European Food Safety Authority regulations.
Executive Committee Member in charge of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Alidan Mbinda said the County government will work closely with the farmers and the Dutch Consortium to ensure success of the project.
